Weiss

History

Pre-Labs

Weiss grew up in a poor household in eastern Germany. He was the only child of his parents, a mechanic and a librarian. They struggled financially, but they had each other. He never really fit in well with his peers back then, with his only friends being on the primitive internet. He would spend much of his youth alone, reading and listening to local rock and metal bands.

At 15, Weiss would get into an accident. During a night in winter, he and his parents drove home from visiting family. As a result of the icy roads, a car collided with them. While they all survived, he took the brunt of the impact. Due to the injuries he had sustained, his left leg needed to be amputated. He would spend much of the year in and out of hospitals. With his family unable to afford a prosthetic leg, his first one was made by his father.

During his time recovering, Weiss developed a passion for the medical field. It'd often get into conversations with hospital staff during its stays, happily listening to them explain their jobs. Originally unsure of what it wanted to do after school, it realized that it wanted to become a doctor. Despite that, the reality of its family's financial situation was clear. The only option was a scholarship. It threw itself into its studies, determined to get into a nice college.

His hard work would pay off. Before he was supposed to enter senior year, Weiss received a paid scholarship from a medical school in Japan. On the flight, he watched as his home country became so small, so far from him. This would be a new chapter in his life.

Weiss's years in medical school would be ones he looked back on fondly. The city he found himself in was much livelier than his hometown. Without much of a LGBT community there, he finally had the chance to be around people like him. He'd sometimes attend gay events in between schoolwork, making friends with some people from nearby colleges. He even got to meet one of his online friends, Mr. KK, in real life.

His roommate was a fellow international student named Youko. They got along well and bonded over their health problems. As time passed, their friendship developed into something more... intense. The two began dating, at just the wrong time. It couldn't survive in medical school. Only a month in, they mutually decided to break up. An amicable breakup, with the two remaining good friends.

Once he graduated, Weiss realized just how rough the job market was. People wanted years of experience, something he just didn't have. But, how is one supposed to get that experience if nobody is hiring? As he took on part time jobs, the search grew frustrating. However, after a late night of looking at job listings he found something promising. Just a doctorate required for a private investor's project. He questioned the legitimacy, but it wasn't like the hospital was going to accept his applications any time soon.

Two days later, he got an email asking him for an interview. This was new. Stranger yet, the location seemed to be a research facility in the woods. Despite the voice in his head telling him it wasn't worth it, that this seemed pretty sketchy, he tried ignoring it. Weiss got this far, may as well see it through.

Weiss had his interview with the project lead, Jadeite. There, he finally learned about the job responsibilities in depth. The crux of the job was lapis research and making living weapons. If hired, he would be in charge of overseeing the health of their subjects. Their interview soon turned into a conversation about their fields of research. The project lead hired him on the spot, assigning him the position of head doctor in spite of his recent graduate status. Just like that, the doctor was now employed.

What a horrible mistake.

Pre-Canon

For months, the group figured out how to clone people. Weiss proved to be vital to the process, being the one to figure out roadblocks most often. During this time, Jadeite would show interest in him. He would take the recent graduate under his wing, calling him his friend. Given the long hours, he got increasingly isolated from the friends he had prior. As a result, the two would often work together. He moved out of his cheap apartment into a two bedroom house with his new income. Things seemed like they were looking up.

However, the scope of the situation would rear its ugly head. Once the organization ironed out the cloning process, Weiss was chosen to be the genetic source for their first attempt. The child was born inside of a test tube, the spitting image of him at that age. It was a disorientating sight. While they were created without complications, their lapis was an anomaly. Unable to be used for purification or pollution research, it was essentially stillborn. For the first time, he saw his boss get angry. Black wouldn't live up to expectations, something that damned them.

The doctor found himself in a situation that only grew more grisly. As more subjects were made, just how abusive and traumatic the labs were for them was abundantly clear. And yet, if he left things would only get worse for them. He was the only one of the leading staff to try to convince the rest to stop. It didn't erase the fact he was complicit in this, something that would haunt him for the rest of his life. His mental state began to deteriorate under the stress of the job. Something Jadeite would take advantage of. With his guilt eating him alive, Weiss didn't fight back against the abuse he received from his boss.

After five subjects were made, its boss arrived late for the first time. Jadeite's wife left him and took the kids with her. In spite of how it was being treated, Weiss couldn't ignore the state he was in. It tried convincing him to go home and take some time off. Maybe, the kids could get a break. But, that gave him an idea: A vacation in Las Vegas could do them both good. Knowing how poorly it could go if its boss went alone, Weiss agreed.

The trip to Las Vegas would go as terribly as possible. Regardless of the colorful scenery, neither of them were having a good time. The doctor learned the hard way he was not built for the heat of Nevada in summer, nor the endless crowds of people. Even the expensive hotel room Jadeite bought for them felt wasted. His reoccurring nightmares continued, leading to him getting barely any sleep most nights.

Late during one of these nights, Jadeite shook it awake. What followed was a string of words that shook it to its core. While Weiss had slept, he reached a realization: They needed to broaden their horizons. His ex-wife was a vessel for the Original Lapis. If they were going to get anywhere with the lapis research, making a vessel for it would be their best bet. His desires to play god had become too much. Reaching its limit, Weiss told its boss how it felt. His plans were only hurting people and that he needed to stop.

However, his words only set Jadeite off. His "friend" gripped onto his neck, tearing into him for speaking out of line. Sleep deprived and running off fear, Weiss was unable to think about the situation clearly. Panicking, he apologized. Jadeite relented, pulling him into a hug. Once again, he praised the doctor and said he forgave him. As much as he wanted to tell him to get away from him, the doctor knew that would only end with him getting violent again. If he was good, he wouldn't get hurt.

The next morning, Weiss asked Jadeite why he did that. His boss feigned concern and denied it happened, claiming it must have had a nightmare. It was his favorite coworker, why would he hurt it? Deep down, it knew that was a lie. But, it wanted to believe that he could still be reasoned with. A naive hope.

Some part of Weiss died during that trip. He became passively suicidal, often taking horrible care of himself. Once they arrived back in Lapistoria, he learned that Jadeite's plans about making god were real. He watched as the research shifted towards studying the divine. A decision that would lead to financial troubles later down the line. As they did, his own humanity felt more and more distant. He felt like little more than an attack dog.

The final subject would be a clone of the project lead, a child named after him. And yet, the two couldn't be more different. Due to Jade's health issues, Weiss was put in charge of overseeing him. He'd have frequent check ups, with Black often insisting on tagging along. During one of the ones without them, he thanked the doctor for always being kind to him. Once he became god, he'd make sure it went to heaven! After the child left, it hid itself in the bathroom and cried. How could it go to heaven after everything its done?

Drowning in darkness, he was convinced the only way out would be his death.

One night, it felt like an angel was sent to save him. Weiss went out to his local gay bar in an attempt to self soothe. After drinking alone for a bit, a stranger asked if she could sit with him. Introducing herself as Elenoa, she said she was new to this town. The two would converse for a while, with the doctor immediately falling for her. Talking to someone who wasn't from the labs was pleasant. He almost felt human again.

As they spoke, the topic of employment came up. Elenoa claimed she was looking for a job and asked Weiss where he worked. If he could do one good thing, it would be making sure she didn't make the same mistake he did. Without saying where it was, he just urged her not to. As the night winded to a close, she offered to walk him home. He took her up on the offer. As selfish as he viewed it, he was dreading being alone again. Once tonight was over, he'd have to go back to the life he despised.

Upon making it to Weiss's house, Elenoa thanked him for his time and asked to trade phone numbers. Despite how small of a gesture it seemed, it was the kindest he had been treated in a long time. The guilt he felt became overwhelming as he reached his breaking point, in front of someone he just met. He lost control of his emotions, frantically apologizing for his crimes. Details of the labs slipped out. It was only a matter of time she saw him as the monster he was and left.

And yet, Elenoa didn't leave. He struggled to understand why, but she asked to come inside. Trying to steady his breathing, Weiss explained everything more coherently. It was the first time he told anyone about the labs, something he insisted on going through alone. While she was understandably shocked, she heard him out. Hell, she asked if HE was being hurt too. Even if he couldn't deny it, he thought he deserved it.

She thought differently. Offering him her hand, Elenoa suggested a plan. If Weiss couldn't break them out alone, why couldn't they break those kids out together and end this? As much as he felt like he should've scrutinized this, it was his only chance. Even though she was a stranger at the time, he had faith in her. The light began to return to his eyes. For weeks they would plan together, becoming friends in the process.

Weiss would continue going to work in the meantime, successfully keeping their plans secret. However, that did not mean things would go perfectly. After the 6th subject disappeared, it gave Jadeite an idea. Pulling the doctor aside, he spoke of his plans. The project lead explained how he realized not all of the test subjects needed to be kept around. In particular, he thought the first subject made was a waste of resources. So, he'd get rid of Black.

Jadeite was willing to kill a child. How little regard he had for Black's life disgusted Weiss to its core. The two got into a fight, with the doctor refusing to back down. Once Jadeite had other duties to attend to, it "had a smoke break" and stepped outside. Getting as far away from the labs as it could, it called Elenoa and worriedly asked if they could start earlier. Thankfully, her schedule was open.

The very next day, the labs came crashing down. Interrupting an experiment on Black, he wrapped them up in his labcoat and ran. It was mostly a success. However, in the chaos of the breakout, he had made a horrible mistake. With his focus all over the place, he lost track of Jade. He was the only success, of course Jadeite wouldn't want to lose him. He had only realized after the fact, not seeing him with the other kids. The all-consuming guilt filled his head once again.

Weiss couldn't forgive himself for this mistake. He kept this fact to himself, not wanting Elenoa to feel like she failed. She didn't know the kids like he did, it was only his fault. As he dropped all but one of the kids off at an orphanage and Elenoa left, it was only him and Black left. Once he explained what had happened to them, he knew what he would do. He'd return them to the rest of the kids and then take his own life. To him, this was the only way he could properly atone. He'd never hurt anyone again.

But, Black still needed to be caught up to speed. Weiss waited with them in his guest room until they finally awoke. Once they did, he explained it as gently as he could. Just as he expected, they didn't take the news that Jade couldn't escape well. After a moment of silence, they asked to stay with the doctor. This shocked him. He was used to Black glaring at him when he did check ups, but they decided to forgive him. If they had faith in him, it didn't want to let them down.

Unbeknownst to Black, this sent Weiss down the road of recovery. Even if it didn't forgive itself, it wanted to get better for their sake. Black deserved a happy life, after everything they went through. It resolved to not be like the staff that had only hurt them. They were raised with love and understanding. With both of their mental health struggles, the doctor studied more about psychology. While it didn't stop the nightmares, learning better coping mechanisms and stopping the maldapative ones always helped.

It had also given him a new goal: Find Jade and save him. If he was too valuable to lose, there was a good chance he was still alive.

In the interim, Weiss would stay in contact with Elenoa. They reached an agreement to help each other out with obtaining information, since he wanted to repay her. As he learned more about her, it became clear she also had a troubled life and no family around. Knowing how isolating of an experience that was, he invited her to spend holidays with them. He would also reconnect with Mr. KK and Youko, even if the rest of his friends from his college days were hard to find. The initial months they spent after the breakout were bittersweet, but pleasant.

Sunny Park Era

But, peace was not in the cards for them. The organization figured out where they lived and made it clear they were still after them. They had to be stopped. From the ex-staff, the revolution was born. It was their mission to ensure nobody else could be hurt by that organization ever again. Weiss would be the main medic of the group, though he was no stranger to the battlefield. He could still do good for this world, in spite of his past misdoings.

Reluctantly, Weiss allowed Black to join the fight. As much as he didn't want any of the kids from the lab getting involved, their desire for justice was impossible to ignore. Plus, the organization was targetting them already. While they were reckless, they held their own well in battle. They DID have more combat experience than he did, after all. Like the rest of the revolution, he would try to protect them as much as he could.

However, the doctor was never the one Jadeite wanted dead. Black was. During one battle, the child got gravely injured. As he worked tirelessly to make sure they'd be okay, Weiss was distraught. Why couldn't they just live a peaceful life? In spite of them pulling through, the doctor fell back into the guilt he was learning to cope with. Upon them waking up, all he could do was just hug them. He couldn't even bring himself to tell them to be more careful. Thankfully, they got the message.

With Black needing to recover, Weiss figured some place in the Pop'n World would be best. The organization only existed in Lapistoria, and the rest of the kids there never had issues with them. They had settled on Sunny Park. Reaching out to Mimi and Nyami, he asked if they could keep an eye on them. Not even prying as to why, the two promised to make sure they would have a good time. With Black in the Pop'n World and Elenoa missing, his home became quiet once more.

In this quiet period, Weiss kept tabs on Jadeite. He had become the principal for a local academy, one that needed a school nurse. The application it sent in got accepted without much trouble. While the job was for going undercover, it found itself enjoying the work it did. Sure, some students were a bit... chaotic, but was a rewarding job. It had also decided to tell Mr. KK about what had happened at the labs. In their conversation, he had given Weiss an offer: If it ever needed Jadeite taken out, he'd do it. Despite the doctor needing to find Jade first, it'd keep it in the back of its mind.

Once Black returned, the two noticed lapis pollution occurring. The culprit was as clear as day.

Lapistoria Era

During one school day, Retsu had come in with a sprained wrist. Nothing out of the ordinary, but Weiss did hear about how he could purify lapises from Nicolas. He wanted to see if the purifier could help with stopping Jadeite. However, the opportunity was cut short by Fuga. Unable to quell his suspicions, the only way out was a pop'n battle. Something he was out of practice on. Losing the fight, he retreated and left his own office

As he regrouped, Weiss encountered someone he hadn't seen in months. He had honestly worried she died, but Elenoa was still alive and inside the school. After they exchanged information, he made it clear she could always find him. From there, the group became a trio once more. Meeting inside of the school's church, they made a plan of action. Near the end of the schoolday, Weiss and Black would break into the office and corner Jadeite.

On the day of the infiltration, Weiss had gone to where he and Black met up once he finished his shifts. However, Fuga was there as well. After a brief confrontation, the doctor managed to find a way out. The two booked it for the principal's office, with Fuga following them. Their plans of encountering Jadeite on their own fell flat, with Retsu already defeating him. They dragged him out, lapis dust trailing behind.

Jadeite was not cooperative during the interrogation. Upon being pressed for information, he told them to find the answers themselves and left. It was there the principal had made a fatal error: He left his office unattended. During its search of the office itself, it discovered the name of the school's chairman, who always seemed to avoid it: Jade. He was alive.

Given Black's trauma with labs, Weiss would search the one behind the office alone. It noticed what looked like a closet from the outside. Opening the door, it saw something that made it feel sick. In that tiny room was an IV and a bed, clearly meant for a child. Jadeite was still experimenting on Jade, no matter how much Weiss had told him before that he couldn't handle it. It fell to its knees in front of the bed, thinking about what he must have experienced alone. For once, all it could feel was wrath. Its hands shaking, it texted Mr. KK about his offer.

If the doctor was going to hell, he'd drag Jadeite down there with him.

The two discussed the terms the next day over coffee. Weiss apologized for getting him involved, but it knew it'd be the first suspect if Jadeite died. It didn't want to throw Black's life into even more disarray by going to jail. They made a plan: Once the doctor found Jade and made sure he was safe, Mr. KK would take the shot. All he needed was some time to prepare and a cue. The doctor tried paying upfront, but he told it to just consider it a favor.

A few days later, Elenoa had sought him out near the end of his shift. Weiss had originally figured it was regarding the new wave of lapis pollution, but she didn't have her usual composure. It had to be something serious. As sunset began, the two entered the church. In there, the questions he had about her life would finally get answered.

Elenoa was a time traveler. She had gone back in time to stop the corporation from stopping a robot apocalypse. The reason why she had reached out to him at that bar? He matched up perfectly with a lead she got for the head of their robotics division. She had never intended to get so involved with his and Black's lives, since she knew she wasn't supposed to stay. She had hoped to one day return to her family, but she realized she could never truly go home. Even if she went back, would it really be HER family? She apologized, confessing she wasn't sure where to go anymore.

For the first time, there was only despair in Elenoa's voice. In a way, it had reminded Weiss of the night they first met. He couldn't force himself to be upset with her, not after everything they've been through together. Instead, he told her he was happy he got to meet her. Even if the truth wasn't clear, what she saved the lives of those kids and showed him life was something worth fighting for. No matter how alone she felt in the world, she would always have people who loved her. Her family would be watching over her.

From that day on, they vowed to stay by each other's side and make the future a kinder place. Elenoa decided against returning, wanting to stay with him and Black. Being around each other felt like home. The two confessed the feelings they had for one another and moved in together. Their years of pining had come to an end.

Then, it was back to business. They still needed to stop the current wave of lapis pollution. From word of mouth, Weiss soon realized the culprit was seemingly Jade himself. However, everything said didn't add up with him as a person. Given the reason for his creation, the doctor developed a theory: Jade got possessed and the true culprit was the Original lapis itself. With Fuga offering to assist them, he joined one of their meetings. Once Jadeite arrived, they learned the situation had gotten much worse.

Rushing to the forest, Weiss saw Jade for the first time in years. The look in his eyes was unrecognizable and cold. From its research, he showed every sign of being a vessel. The doctor advised Fuga to fight against Retsu, seeing something similar happen at the labs. Once he was saved, the thing controlling Jade has transported them back to the lapis research labs.

As much as Weiss tried to hide it, "Jade" revealed he was from the labs and wasn't saved that day. He felt a pange of guilt as Elenoa realized the truth. But, even if the vessel couldn't be saved then, he could be saved now. It was up to the Tsugidoka and a person with a black lapis. With Jadeite's reduced to dust, that person would be Black. One Pop'n match later and just like that, Jade was severed from the deity. He passed out from the strain of it all. From there, the doctor's theory would be proven true.

As soon as Jade awoke, Weiss began to give him another checkup. The child was physically okay, but he was obviously dissociating. When Jadeite had approached and reached down, he immediately recoiled away. With him gripping onto its labcoat for dear life, whatever happened in the time apart must have been horrible. The doctor made sure to stay by his side for the rest of the events. When it got the chance, it texted Mr. KK and asked if he was available.

Weiss was the last to awake in the Pop'n World. By this time, the Tsugidoka and Toa had left and Black was off finding Jade. Perfect timing. As Jadeite tried to get a new lapis from MZD, the doctor scratched the back of his neck. A moment later, the principal was shot. It was a strange feeling. Knowing he was capable of killing someone would haunt Weiss, but he tried telling himself it had to be done.

Post-Canon

Once everything was said and done, MZD asked where Jade was going. Deep down, Weiss did want to adopt him. After the cruelty he faced, he wanted to make sure Jade was safe. But, he did just orphan him. However, Elenoa suggested it instead. The two decided that he should be the one to decide, after having so little control over his life before. When Jade was caught up to speed, he asked if he wanted to come live with them. He happily accepted.

Weiss would keep his job at the academy as staff restructured. While he still questions why he was given so much mercy, he had grown a lot since then. As Jade grappled with remorse regarding the possession, he would help him out with processing those feelings. It was something he was very familiar with. In the process, it taught him to be kinder to himself as well. In spite of the peace that followed, he'd continue fighting for justice.

Weiss isn't the type for parties, but he did help out with running the Unilab per Mimi and Nyami's request.
