God Above

History

Pre-Canon

On the first day of Lapistoria, The Original Lapis was created to oversee the world. Without emotions and a moral compass, it had existed to serve the sole role of making sure Lapistoria had flourished. Despite that, it still had awareness and a consciousness. Shortly after its creation, MZD had left it alone to run the world by itself. With only instructions to "make plenty of friends", it was at a loss on what to do.

Pursuing people who felt alone as vessels, it tried to follow the instructions MZD had left it. The first of its hosts was iO. In an attempt to reach its creator, it figured one of his angels would have been its best bet. He had agreed mostly out of curiosity, but a bit of pity as well. However, it learned the hard way it was stuck in this world. Hosts lost their lapises upon getting possessed, so transportation between worlds was impossible. Had it not been for Lower, the angel would have met the same fate. Other vessels would not be so lucky.

As time passed, Lapis gained and lost more hosts. One left because she was due to give birth to twins, another couldn't handle the strain it had on their body, a third just grew annoyed with it. With each vessel, it had developed the ability to feel emotions like they did. But, all it felt was frustration. It watched as the world grew and helped however it could. Yet, it never seemed to be enough. No matter what, people would come and go. It thought long and hard about what its creator said about friends. The deity wondered if it was something it could even do.

One day though, it would make a friend.

Late one night in spring, The Original Lapis sensed an intense loneliness. A sorrow that felt all consuming, located in a nearby academy. It wandered the vacant halls, getting closer and closer to the principal's office. As it entered the office, it realized there was a lab where a closet should've been. Were school science labs supposed to be there? Once it broke in, the source of the feeling made himself clear. There, it would meet its final and longest-lasting host: Jade.

The two sat and talked, staring at the stars. The whole scenario felt uncanny to it, although the huge lapises in test tubes wasn't helping either. Despite that, it enjoyed Jade's company. As they talked, it learned about how he was a test subject for lapis research. There used to be more subjects, up until a breakout he was left behind in. Just like it, he was abandoned too. Lapis's mind was made up. After everything it heard, it couldn't just leave him there. It asked if he wanted to become a vessel. Yet, he seemed to be... prepared for this? Without a second thought, he accepted. Innocently, he declared they'd be friends forever.

But, the possession turned south immediately. Jade's life, no matter how short it was, was a cruel one. Faced with memories no one should have to experience, Lapis couldn't comprehend it. The experience harshened its world view and only made its resentment for MZD grow. If there was a god proper for this world, people wouldn't have had to suffer like that. But, he was off in the Pop'n World. Maybe, Jade could be a good god for this world instead.

Lapistoria Era

In the morning, Lapis saw someone it had met before through a different host: Jadeite. Somehow, HE was the one who caused all of this. Feeling nothing but anger and fear, it attacked him. It was not a pretty sight. Once it stopped, it set some ground rules for moving forward. While he could continue lapis research, Jadeite was explicitly forbidden from doing so beyond playing pop'n with others. Lapis kept it and Jade's plans of godhood to themselves, knowing that his father would try to get involved. The less they had to see of him, the better.

For a while, the two had a happy time. Facing the world together, they felt unstoppable. Jade had fun playing pop'n with others and seeing everything he missed, while it furthered its goals. In the interim, they worked as the school's chairman mostly to observe the people around. It kept a close eye on the Tsugidoka, well aware they were blessed with the ability to purify lapises.

As Lapis's methods grew more unscrupulous, it realized Jade was beginning to question if it was really right. However, its convictions stayed firm as its morals fell to the wayside. The ends justify the means, after all. Sure, it may have mind controlled a pair of twins and trapped Rinka in the void. But, those were temporary things. Once they became a god, everything would have been worth it.

Soon enough, they would find Retsu struggling with his lapis. Without informing its vessel, it began the final phases of its plans. All beginning with sending the purifier on a rampage and setting the forest ablaze. With its host panicking, it easily took full control of the body. The deity watched the scene unravel with glee, not even being phased by Fuga stopping him.

Despite that, Jade was still clinging on. In an attempt to shake him off, Lapis did something it promised it'd never do. It took him and the rest of the group back to the labs. There, it finally came face to face with the people who it perceived as abandoning its host. While it promised Jade it'd help him find them, all it could feel was anger. It let loose its built up resentment, with Black as the target.

This would prove to be a mistake. Jade's fear was soon replaced by a much more coherent anger. As it explained its goals to the rest of the group, the two fought for control. The strain made itself clear as crystal began to consume their body. As Retsu severed their bond, Lapis heard the words it never wanted to hear from the person it grew so close to.

"We're not friends anymore!"

Without a vessel once again, it accepted it would have to complete this alone. Determined to keep everyone in Lapistoria, it began absorbing everyone's lapises. However, MZD would finally return. After he put a stop to it, Lapis resorted to its final plan: Cutting off the way out by ceasing its own life.

Post-Canon

Once it was revived in the Pop'n World, all it could feel was guilt for everything it did. The first thing it did was ask MZD to not blame Jade for any of what happened. To its shock, the god apologized to it as well. Alongside a new moral compass, he had let it know it could travel to and from worlds like everyone else. So if it ever missed him, it could visit him anytime. It rejected that offer.

Once everyone was back in Lapistoria and it gave a much needed apology, it resumed its duties as god of the world. Finally accepting that friends can go, it decided to no longer take vessels. But, it would cherish every friend it made.

Bonus HCs

  • It didn't fully forgive MZD, bonds with Eclat over feelings of abandonment.
  • Many of its vessels were transgender. As a result, it's a strong believer that people shouldn't be bound to what they were "born as".
  • It befriended Honey as a result of this.
  • Helped Jade out with socially transitioning.
  • It does make up with Jade after the events of Lapistoria. However, he made it apologize to Black first before accepting the apology.
  • Nia and Toa are the kids of one of its old vessels. It blessed their lapises as thanks to their mother.
  • Tends to take after its hosts in some ways while possessing them, especially when it comes to age. As a result, it has secondhand trauma from some vessels.
  • It despises Jadeite. If it weren't for the fact Jade legally couldn't live alone, it would have ditched him from the start.
