History
Pre-Canon
As Subject 1, Black was the first successful clone of a human in Lapistoria's history. In any other situation, they would've been a marvel of science, a breakthrough that would make the history books. In spite of that, they were deemed a failure for their purposes of creation. With a black lapis that couldn't pollute or even purify, it was useless for research. While they were better at combat, their sense of justice often conflicted with the training they received to be a soldier. They could never bring themself to hurt innocent people.
Several members of staff abused them as a result of their "failures," leaving lasting mental scars. As time went on, more subjects were created. Ones who also couldn't meet the lofty expectations of their creators and received the brunt of their wrath. Black quickly grew protective over the other kids at the labs. It wasn't their fault the adults weren't kind, they didn't deserve this. It made them realize how they were being treated wasn't fair either. The events without a doubt traumatized him, but they tried to stay strong for the rest of the kids. If he could make sure they were as safe as possible, he could face anything. To the annoyance of the scientists, he became rebellious as a result.
The final of these subjects would be Jade, the one success. Despite how differently they were viewed by staff, the two were inseparable. It got to the point where they insisted on being there for each other during experiments. Once they figured out what families were, they declared themselves siblings. They swore to one day escape the labs and see the world together. As this went on, the relationship between their genetic sources was deteriorating.
One day, Black eavesdropped on an argument between Weiss and Jadeite. Something he did often, both out of curiosity and to see what experiments were planned. But, the conversation today wasn't about experiments. As he listened in, he realized it was about what the staff was going to do with him. Something about how they didn't need to keep failures around.
Jadeite had referred to it as "burying him in darkness." The euphemism didn't fly over his head, especially given Weiss's reaction to it. The situation was as sobering as it was horrifying. He ran off, the implications of it all weighing heavily on him. He refused to tell the rest of the kids, even if Jade could tell something was wrong. All he could do was try to convince him that everything was going to be okay and dread tomorrow.
And yet, he survived it.
Black was unconscious for the lab breakout, due to an interrupted experiment. From the flickers of consciousness they got, they saw a snowy road and Weiss carrying them. They awoke in an unfamiliar bedroom, with the doctor fighting off sleep in the corner. As soon as he noticed them awake, he began to fill them in on what they missed. They were free from now on, but at a cost. Their sibling got lost in the chaos and was still with the rest of the staff. That piece of news felt like a punch in the gut. As the doctor had explained what happened, they struggled to process it all.
But, one thing was clear to them: Weiss cared about them and the rest of the kids. They remembered the argument that led to this well, where he fought for their sake. At least he viewed them as a person. Even though they didn't fully trust him yet, they asked to stay with him. While the doctor was their genetic source, they only became a family that day.
Shortly after, he met the person who came up with the breakout in the first place. Elenoa had the honor of being the first adult the ex-test subject met who wasn't from the labs. While all of Weiss's friends were nice to them, she was definitely their favorite. They looked up to her a lot and she was good at talking at their level instead of talking down to them. Somehow, she seemed to understand their grief well. She would occasionally visit their house to exchange intel with the doctor for the sake of her mission, whatever that may be. During this time, she became an honorary member of the household. The three of them even spent Black's first Christmas together.
For around two months, they lived as peacefully as they could have. It was a period of adjustment for Black. Being treated like an actual person wasn't something they were used to. Yet, the people around them kept being kind to them. They slowly grew more used to the outside world, experiencing all they missed. Getting to sleep in, having a warm cup of hot chocolate, the little joys of life. There was a sense of bittersweetness to it all, given what proceeded. But, they felt safe for once.
Sunny Park Era
That peace came to a harsh end with a bullet through the living room window. It became clear: The organization needed to be stopped. With the ex-staff that opposed and Elenoa, the revolution was born. Black demanded to join, wanting to use his combat experience for good. Even though the adults did not want him there, he quickly became the heart of the revolution. With a natural gift for revving up the crowd, his passion for it was as clear as day. He was determined to fight for a kinder future, in spite of the cruelty of this world. The rest of the people involved with the revolution tend to be protective over him.
Black's insistence on joining the battlefield wasn't just due to their sense of justice, however. Deep down, it also stemmed from their own survivor's guilt. If their life wasn't on the line, then maybe Jade could've escaped instead. Jade, who they didn't expect to still be alive. While they hid it from Weiss and Elenoa, their self-blame festered. Their initial recklessness in battle was a result of this.
Ultimately, it led to a battle that severely injured them. While they escaped with their life, the effect it left on the group was clear. Upon waking up, the first thing they noticed was how distraught Weiss looked. He just hugged them, not even saying "be more careful out there" like usual. Even Elenoa was there, waiting for them to wake up. Seeing how the others reacted made them realize something. Despite being a "failure" in the scientists and even their own eyes, people loved and cared about them. What they were at the labs didn't matter anymore, because they could just make their own destiny.
Black didn't fight it when they were told they needed to stay out of battle to recover. They spent their recovery period in Sunny Park, somewhere far away from the battlefield. But, it wasn't far from their past. The ruins of a planned research institute stood there, abandoned after the animals of the park attacked the building. Black would frequent the area, trying to process their past. They hoped to find clues about Jade's wearabouts there, but to no avail. As it stood, they just couldn't save him. All they could do was hope that somehow, he was okay. Even if that felt less and less likely.
However, they were not the only person trespassing on abandoned property. They would befriend the other people who would hang out there, Jack and Nia. Jack would be the first person to find them there. Due to their similar tastes and rhyming names, they quickly became friends. They would ultimately open up about the labs and their own fears about Jade not making it out. However, he told them there was always a chance they'd meet again. Fate was a strange thing, after all.
Meanwhile for Nia, it was because both of them had struggled in social situations. Despite its history, the ruins proved to be a nice, dark place to go to when socializing was overwhelming. After a while of existing together in peace, they slowly became friends. Due to their time in the lab, Black had no clue she was an idol. She was grateful for that. The two of them were blissfully unaware of the events they would face in a year or two's time together. A good chunk of their time in the park was spent hanging out with them and the stray cats. To quell their desire to fight, they played pop'n.
Lapistoria Era
The events of Lapistoria had begun not long after they were able to fight again. They would return to the revolution, knowing they were never alone. Thankfully, the next mission would prove to be simple enough. Lapis pollution was something they were very familiar with. With the group's history, the culprit seemed so obvious. They just had to find where Jadeite was doing his research now. Even better yet, Weiss was working in the same academy as a cover job.
The revolutionaries came up with a plan: As the schoolday ended, they would get Jadeite while he was alone. Black waited outside the school where they usually did. However, before the doctor could arrive they were approached by one of the students. Fuga began to question them, something they didn't want to get involved with. Unfortunately, he said the worst thing he could have: That they was hurting people the same way Jadeite did. This set the ex-test subject off badly, spurring them into having a pop'n match with him. A close match that Black just barely won.
After the confrontation, they made their way to the principal's office. Jadeite had just lost the battle between him and Retsu. Upon being apprehended, the principal would not give up any information. If they were going to get any answers, they'd have to find them. They'd rummage through his office for any information, even if Weiss would handle the lab in there by himself. It unnerved Black just a bit too much. With the intel they could scrounge up, the mission was a success. Just like that, it seemed to be all over.
And yet, the pollution started back up. With the assistance of the lapis purifier, the revolutionaries went back to their research. Meeting in the school's church, they gathered what info they had. Fuga would join up with them for a meeting, in spite of their rockier introduction. It would get cut short by Jadeite, revealing things had gotten worse. Eventually, the true culprit would reveal itself by causing Retsu's rampage. As Black entered the scene, they noticed their friend and another kid there.
Someone who seemed so... familiar.
Any time they could've had to put two and two together was cut short by being thrown right back into the labs. The familiar boy treated them coldly. Revealing himself as another victim of the labs, he was the one success of the lot. In their panic and anger, the obvious connection slipped their mind entirely. Instead, they tried and failed to figure out how there was another kid there. Their memory of back then was fuzzy and heavily repressed, but would they forget someone entirely?
A black lapis was needed to stop him. Jadeite proved to be unable to help, leaving it up to them. When given the chance to help stop the plans, they jumped on it. However, once the boy was separated from his lapis, he started acting and even looking like himself again. He had the same wavy hair and pink eyes as someone they were sure they lost long ago. Upon hearing the boy's name, they started tearing up. Finally, everything clicked into place for Black.
By some miracle, Jade had survived the years he spent alone. Becoming a vessel for god, he wasn't the one in control of his actions. Even in his escape from the lab, he never was fully free. As the truth unraveled, it became so clear to Black. In an odd way, knowing their lapis was used to save him gave them a sense of closure. If they couldn't save him back then, they could save him now. Maybe, their lapis wasn't so bad after all. They watched over him for the rest of the lab events, waiting for a chance for it to be just them.
Once Black awoke in the Pop'n World, they quickly got up to leave. Talking with everyone else could come later, they had to find Jade before anyone else could. However, MZD stopped them before they left. He gave them a pointer: If they were looking for Jade, he saw him running off that way. After giving each other a thumbs up, the revolutionary ran off. Jadeite was still out like a light, so nothing could stop them now.
They found him sitting under a tree, a fair distance away from everyone else. It reminded them of a dream they had before. Upon spotting him, they called out his name. As they made eye contact, the shock and guilt on his face was as clear as day. Yet, they couldn't bring themselves to be upset at him anymore. They knelt down next to him and did what they wanted to do for so long.
After the years apart, Black held his brother tightly. In a shaky voice, they admitted they were sure he died back then and apologized for not recognizing him. While they tried to keep a strong face, their hands couldn't stop shaking. Jade, on the other hand, couldn't hold back anymore. The events of what transpired weighed heavily on him. He broke down sobbing, apologizing for everything. It felt like waking up from a bad nightmare. At long last, it was finally over.
Post-Canon
The two sat and talked for a while. Jade confessed how scared he was, knowing he'd have to go back home after all of this. They both knew his "father" was definitely furious. Black promised they wouldn't let that happen, no matter what. Even if they'd have to kill Jadeite, things would be different this time. After he asked them not to do that, they learned about what they were up to in their time apart. As it turns out, they BOTH realized they were transgender during that time.
MZD had discovered them in the middle of their catching up. He gave them their lapises back, even offering to give them more normal ones. After all, black lapises didn't spawn naturally. But, Black liked their lapis now. After bringing them back, they realized Jadeite was conspiciously absent. While they were told he just got arrested for child abuse, the older child suspected something more was at play. Weiss and Elenoa weren't the types to involve the police. Regardless, Jade didn't have to go back to his old home. But, that meant he was an orphan now. The question at hand was brought up: Where will he go?
When given the choice, the answer was obvious to the both of them. He got adopted into the revolutionaries household, making him and Black brothers officially. What went from one of the worst days of their lives became maybe the best. They could finally keep their promise of exploring the world together. The first places they went to was Sunny Park. Jade always had a soft spot for animals, so they KNEW he'd love it there. As they had a peaceful day for once, Black couldn't help but reflect on things. Maybe, things would be okay now.
Even though times grew more peaceful, the spirit of revolution never fades.
